Those who were not afraid to make investments in the development of ports at the very beginning of the quarantine, have already been able to feel the benefits of them. We present a selection of the best projects in different countries.
USA, port of Savannah (Georgia)
The port is located on the border of two states and is experiencing an unprecedented boom in container loading. Therefore, the investors decided:
Deepen the bottom to accommodate large vessels.
Install new cranes (20 gantry and 8 for the berth).
Create new berths that will increase the port’s capacity by 20%.
Increase the workforce by 1400 employees.
Slovenia, port of Koper
The only one in the country accepting sea and intercontinental ships. With an investment of $ 53.7 million, the container terminal was expanded, capable of increasing the throughput to 1.5 million TEU. Along with this, it is planned to establish a railway connection by building a new branch of tracks until 2026.
USA, Port of Charleston (South Carolina)
One of the oldest ports this year has acquired a new container terminal. It was launched after an 11-year hiatus in the construction of such facilities, which made it possible to significantly increase the port’s capacity. Five cranes were installed at the berth, and another 25 installed at the terminal, which makes it possible to carry out high-speed unloading of vessels up to 20 thousand TEU.
The volume of investments of $ 1 billion, according to experts, should pay off twice. In parallel with the construction of additional terminals, it is planned to deepen the bottom of the harbor.
Iran, port of Chabahar
Works since 2017, but not yet 100% used. India acted as an investor, investing $ 500 million in the construction of the port and the development of infrastructure. The construction of new branches of the railway in the coming years will increase the attractiveness of Chabahar.
Sweden, Tunadal terminal
The decision to build was taken this year due to the skyrocketing demand for sawnwood and pulp and the explosive growth in container trade.
Planned:
- Deepening the bottom by 3 m.
- Construction of a new embankment.
- Capital works on strengthening the foundation and replacing piles.
- Creation of sites for cargo handling.
The total amount of investments reaches $ 54.7 million.
Indonesia, port in Gresika
The planned capacity of the new facility is impressive – about 3 million TEU / year. The start of work is scheduled for the third quarter of this year, and the volume of investments will amount to approximately $ 1.2 billion. This will be the first joint venture in Indonesia, where a foreign investor takes part.
In addition to the terminal, a 110-hectare logistics park will be created, which will provide customers with high-quality service.
Ukrainian ports have great potential and can also generate income for investors. It is important to find them, and agree on investments at the legislative level.
